French Riviera Wedding Venues: A Videographer’s Guide
Picture the hour before sunset on the Côte d’Azur: the sea turns from steel blue to soft gold, the stone terraces hold the warmth of the day, and everyone you love is walking slowly toward the ceremony. That hour is what a French Riviera wedding is built around, and it is also what a wedding film is built around. Choosing the venue is really choosing where that light will fall.

This guide is written for international couples, mostly from the US and the UK, who are comparing places along the coast and wondering how the choice will shape their wedding film. If you are still deciding whether to marry in France or Italy, our page on wedding videography on the French Riviera explains how we work on both coasts.
What is the best area for a wedding on the French Riviera?
There is no single best area; each town offers a different mood. According to French Wedding Style’s planning guide, the main wedding areas are Nice for classic elegance and Mediterranean views, Cannes for glamorous beachfront settings, Antibes for a relaxed but luxurious feel, Saint-Tropez for exclusive luxury and Monaco for refined harbor views. For a film, that translates into very different visual personalities.
Nice gives you grand seafront architecture and a city that comes alive in the evening. We filmed Laura and Nathan’s wedding in Nice, a film where the Mediterranean light sets the tone from the first frame.
Antibes is described as relaxed yet luxurious, a coastal setting that suits couples who want elegance without formality. Cannes brings film-festival prestige and a glamorous beachfront. Èze, the hilltop village between Nice and Monaco, looks down over the sea from above, which gives ceremonies there a very different perspective from the seafront towns.
Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild: a Cap Ferrat wedding venue above the sea

If you want to understand what a Riviera icon looks like, start with Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild on the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula, between Nice and Monaco. The villa describes a French garden overlooking Cap Ferrat, a reception hall with pink marble columns and an oriental-style salon with views of Villefranche harbor at sunset, all within nine gardens. Its events page states that exclusive hire begins at €100,000 and that the 2026 wedding season was already fully booked, a useful reminder of how early the best Riviera venues disappear. For a real wedding held there, with the planner, photographer and florist credited, see this feature on French Wedding Style.
We mention it as a benchmark of what the top end of the market looks like. The questions below apply to any venue, whatever the budget.
What a wedding videographer looks for in a French Riviera venue
When couples ask us how to choose a venue, we answer with five questions that have nothing to do with the guest count.
Where does the sun go? A terrace that faces west keeps the ceremony warm and golden into the evening; a ceremony in full midday sun is harsh for everyone. Ask your planner for the exact sunset time on your date.
Is there a place for the quiet moments? The portrait walk, the first look and the vows read in private need a corner of the property without guests passing through.
What is the plan B? A covered space with good natural light matters more than people expect, because a rain plan that feels like an afterthought shows up in the film.
How does sound behave? Cicadas, waves and a string trio are beautiful. A neighboring party or road is not. Ask about music curfews, which are common.
How easy is the schedule? Fewer transfers mean more time for the day to breathe, and a calmer couple on camera.
Questions to ask any venue before you book
Beyond the views, a few practical questions protect both your day and your film. What are the music and noise curfews, and do they apply to the ceremony as well as the party? Does the venue allow outside vendors, or does it require its own caterer and partners? Is filming allowed in every space, and is drone filming permitted at all? What is the plan if the weather turns, and how much natural light does the indoor option get? How much time do you have in the space before the guests arrive? Written answers to these questions make planning much calmer, especially when you are organizing from another country.
Practical facts for international couples
Once you have a shortlist, our guide to planning a French Riviera wedding from abroad covers the planner, florist and videographer side of the process.
Season and timing: May through September is peak season, and French Wedding Style notes that sought-after venues can sell out 12 to 18 months ahead, so shoulder months often bring better availability. Nice Côte d’Azur airport is the main gateway, about 30 minutes from many of the major destinations.
The legal side: according to the French government’s official guide to marriage in France, a marriage can be celebrated in a commune where at least one spouse, or one spouse’s parent, has a durable link through domicile or residence, and residence means at least one month of continuous habitation before the marriage announcements are published. Foreign couples follow the same rules, with a separate route through their country’s consulate when both spouses are foreigners living abroad. As French Wedding Style points out, most international couples therefore marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony at their venue. Please confirm the current rules with the relevant town hall or your consulate before you plan around them; this is not legal advice.
How the venue choice shapes your wedding film
A cinematic wedding film is made of light, place and people. A well-chosen venue gives us all three without forcing them. We typically spend time with couples on a call before the wedding to talk through the venue, the timeline and the moments that matter most to them, and our Riviera page shows the kind of films we make for couples traveling from abroad.
If you are comparing venues and would like an honest opinion on how each would film, tell us your date and the places you are considering.
Frequently asked questions
When should we book a French Riviera wedding venue? Plan 12 to 18 months ahead for peak season; the most sought-after venues can sell out in that window.
Can we legally marry at a Riviera villa as foreigners? Generally not; the civil ceremony is held at the town hall with residency requirements, so many couples marry legally at home and celebrate on the Riviera.
Which airport do we fly into? Nice Côte d’Azur, about 30 minutes from many major wedding destinations.
Do you film weddings on the French Riviera? Yes, for international couples, in Nice, Cannes, Antibes, Èze, Monaco, Menton and Saint-Tropez.
