Private Wedding Vows: The 2027 Trend and Your Film

Private Wedding Vows: Why Couples Are Keeping the Words for Each Other, and How a Film Can Hold Them

It is early on the morning of the wedding. The house is still quiet, a window is open to the sea, and the two of you are sitting side by side with a folded page each. Nobody is watching. One of you reads, slowly, and the other looks at the floor, then at the hands, then finally up. A few lines in, the voice breaks. Later that day, in front of everyone, you will say a short and simple version of your promises. These private wedding vows belong only to you.

We are Luciano and Emilia of Echo of Journey, wedding filmmakers based in Maiori on the Amalfi Coast. Private vows are one of the quietest ideas in weddings today, and they raise a question we hear from couples who are planning a film: can something so private be filmed, and should it be? This article explains what private vows are, the formats couples choose, what the trend reports say, and how to plan them at a destination wedding in Italy.

What are private wedding vows?

Private vows are the promises you make to each other away from your guests. Instead of reading them aloud at the ceremony, you exchange them alone, or with only a few people nearby. The Bridal Journey, an Australian wedding publication, wrote in 2025 that more couples are choosing to keep this moment deeply personal and private, and the article was updated in October 2026.

Why couples are choosing them

The reasons listed by The Bridal Journey are easy to recognise. Modern weddings are increasingly personal and reflect the values of the couple. Speaking intimate words in front of a large audience can feel daunting. Private vows fit a wider move towards intentional, curated experiences, and they give you a moment of closeness in the middle of a busy, social day.

There is a second reason that we see from behind the camera. Many people are different when they know everyone is looking. Alone, the voice is softer, the sentences are longer, and the face does something it would not do on a stage.

Four ways to do it

The same article describes four formats, and each one works well in Italy.

  • Vows at the first look. You exchange them during the private moment before the ceremony. If this appeals, see how a private first look fits into your day in our Amalfi Coast wedding timeline.
  • Letters. Each of you writes a letter and reads it silently before the ceremony. It is the easiest format for people who dislike speaking aloud.
  • Vows after the ceremony. You slip away once the guests have gone to the cocktail hour and read your vows to each other.
  • Vows in an ordinary moment. Over a morning coffee, on a walk by the sea, or on the sofa of the suite, before or after the wedding.

What the 2027 reports say about intimacy

We did not find a survey that measures private vows directly, so we will not give you a percentage. What the 2027 reports do show is a mood. Easy Weddings, in its wedding trends to watch for 2027 (published 23 September 2026, updated 6 October 2026), says couples with fewer than 50 guests are designing experiences built around genuine connection, and that intimate weddings in 2027 will focus less on performative elements. The Say I Do guide to personalising your ceremony lists writing your own vows among the most popular ways to personalise a ceremony, and says traditional vows can feel impersonal to some couples.

Put these together and the direction is clear: less performance, more truth. Private vows are one answer to that wish. If you are also thinking about a small guest list, our article on what a destination wedding videographer should capture shows how a film follows the moments that matter.

Can a film capture something so private?

Yes, if you want it to, and only if you want it to. This is how we approach it, and the decision is always yours.

  • Option one: nothing. You keep the moment entirely for yourselves. We wait outside and the film simply continues afterwards.
  • Option two: from a distance, without sound. We film silhouettes, hands, the light, the paper, but not the words. You see the emotion and keep the words private.
  • Option three: with sound. A small microphone records the vows, and we keep the audio as a private gift for the two of you, or place it in your film, as you prefer.
  • Option four: letters. We film the hands, the pages and your faces as you read, and not the text.

Tell us during planning which option you prefer. If you choose sound, you can still ask us to leave the audio out of the public version, or to deliver it separately. Years later, a voice is often what people miss the most, which is why we like to mention this option.

Planning private vows in Italy

A few practical ideas, based on how weddings in Italy usually run.

  • Choose a quiet place. A terrace, a garden bench, a stone corridor or a room with a window. Ask your planner for somewhere that guests will not cross.
  • Give it time in the timeline. Even ten or fifteen unhurried minutes help. Stairs, heat and old stone paths slow everyone down on the Amalfi Coast. See the timeline guide for how to count backwards from the ceremony.
  • Think about light and weather. Our guide to the best time for an Amalfi Coast wedding explains how the season changes both. Wind can make recording difficult, so choose a sheltered spot if you want sound.
  • Bring paper. A page is easier than a phone, and it is not distracted by notifications. Bring a pen for any last changes.
  • Agree on a signal. Your planner or a friend lets you know when the time is over, so that nobody has to look at a watch.

Keeping your guests included

The Bridal Journey article offers two ways to keep guests in the story. The officiant can tell your love story during the ceremony without revealing the private vows, and you can use shortened traditional vows in the ceremony while saving the more personal promises for the private exchange. We would add a third: let your guests know in advance that you are doing something private, so no one feels left out. A line in the programme or a word from the planner is enough.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not leave the vows for the last minute. Write them a few weeks before, then read them aloud once so that you know how they sound. Do not choose a place in the sun without shade or water. Do not decide on sound at the last moment: if you want the audio, tell your filmmaker before the day so that the equipment is ready. And do not feel that you must share them with a camera. A moment that remains yours is also a wonderful gift.

Frequently asked questions

What are private wedding vows?

They are vows exchanged away from guests, before or after the ceremony, in a letter or in a quiet moment, instead of being read aloud in front of everyone.

Can we still have vows in the ceremony?

Yes. The Bridal Journey suggests a shortened traditional version in the ceremony and the personal promises in private.

Can a videographer record private vows?

Yes, if you ask. Options include no filming, filming without sound, or recording the audio with a small microphone. You decide what goes into your film.

Are private vows legally valid in Italy?

Private vows are a personal ritual and have no legal effect. The legal side of marrying in Italy follows its own rules, which we explain in our guide to marriage paperwork in Italy.

How much does a wedding film with Echo of Journey cost?

Our published range for Italy is €4,000 to €6,000+. See the information page.
